A Few of My Favorite Things

Oftentimes when we travel, we miss the foods, flavors, and comforts of home. But that longing can limit us from appreciating new and different things. Here are three things I'm loving right now in Mexico...

  1. Totopos corn chips: If you like "Hint of Lime" tortilla chips, you'd love these. They have an even stronger lime flavor atop a slightly thicker but still light and crunchy round chip. I picked them up on a whim on our first grocery trip and we keep going back for more because they are addicting!

  2. The Avocados are always ripe! You don't need to schedule your guacamole or taco night 4 days in advance. We can just pick up a few ripe ones and slice them open later that day for perfectly tender and delicious flavor. We put them on our eggs, sandwiches, or add salt and pepper as a side with the rest of our dinner.

  3. Dried Hibiscus: You can find a whole tray piled high with dried hibiscus flowers in the grocery stores. I love the smell of them when you walk by: it smells like a blend of ripe raspberries and subtle but fresh roses. When we came to Oaxaca on our scouting trip in August, the Airbnb owner had left a pitcher of iced hibiscus tea in the fridge for us, and a jar of hibiscus in the kitchen. It does have a tart flavor like cranberries, so we added some honey or sugar to sweeten it up a bit. It's very refreshing on a hot day and has many health benefits including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. We loved it so much that we used up all the remaining dried hibiscus within the week. Now it's a staple in our home.
